Design of Cartridge Heating Elements
These items are typically manufactured from seven different parts including: heating coil, insulation, sealing, sheath, watt density, lead wire type and termination. The electric coil is encased inside a metal sheath which is insulated with ceramic, mica, mineral or fiberglass material. The type of insulation is based upon the desired wattage and application for the heater. It is important to note that the insulation is a required component because contact between the heating coil and sheath could cause short-circuiting. Sheaths can be constructed from a variety of materials including aluminum, copper, iron, nickel and stainless steel.
Applications of Cartridge Heating Elements
When installing cartridge heating elements there are a number of factors to consider such as proper wattage and heat temperature. Cartridge heating elements are utilized for various applications and industries such as food services, fluid heating, hot plates, semiconductors, shrink wrap machines, labeling machinery, die cutting, mold forming, packaging, hot stamping, sealing printing, plastic processing, rubber forming and much more. Cartridge heating elements will often be inserted through a close fitting hole and will have a surface thermocouple or remote microcontroller. The amount of heat is based upon how much electricity is encountering the resistance and many types of cartridge heating elements can adjust their temperatures for a specific application.
