Fiberglass Sheets
Fiberglass sheets are flat panels that are made from plastic reinforced by tiny fibers of glass.

Advantages of Fiberglass Sheets
Aside from tensile strength, fiberglass owes its versatility and reliability to quite a few other physical properties. It is resistant to corrosion, extreme weather conditions, and chemicals such as organic solvents, bleach, and acid. They have a high level of mechanical strength and high dimensional stability, and have a low level of friction. Its strength-to-weight ratio, however, may be the most valued physical characteristic of fiberglass. Its light weight makes for easy transportation and installation. At the same time, fiberglass is incredibly strong.
Using the molding process to fabricate fiberglass sheets comes at a relatively inexpensive cost. As a result, it is inexpensive to manufacture fiberglass sheets in large quantities. One can say the same for the final cost of the fiberglass products themselves. Since these fiberglass products can be made from a variety of materials, an experienced and reliable fiberglass manufacturer will be ready and willing to assist you in finding the appropriate type of fiberglass for your application.
Materials Used for Fiberglass Sheets
In order to accommodate for a variety of applications, fiberglass sheets are available in materials with varying levels of optical clarity, ultraviolet resistance, durability, and strength. Materials that can be used to fabricate fiberglass sheets include: S-glass epoxy, E-glass epoxy composite, satin weave cloth laminate E-glass, woven rovings laminate E-glass, and chopped strand mat laminate E-glass.
Design of Fiberglass Sheets
Another term for fiberglass is glass reinforced plastic, or GRP. GRP is composed of polymer resins and small glass fibers. In most plastic materials, polymer resin is the primary component, and can vary in levels of tensile strength, which is measured in megapascals (MPa). For example, un-reinforced polyester resin has a tensile strength of roughly 55 MPa. However, reinforcing it with fiberglass can nearly double this level. There are some fiberglass-reinforced polyester materials that feature a tensile strength of up to 800 MPa. Because of the ability of fiberglass to make such a drastic difference in the overall strength of a plastic material, fiberglass-reinforced plastic materials are used extensively in a broad range of industries. Fiberglass sheets, in particular, are used in light construction applications such as greenhouse coverings, flooring, and skylight paneling.
There are numerous ways to create fiberglass products, with fiberglass molding being the most popular method. Fiberglass molding involves the combination of fiberglass with a thermoplastic gel or resin. In the first step of the fiberglass molding process, heat is applied to a thermoplastic resin until it reaches a molten state. The resin is then poured into a mold (also known as a mandrel), spray-coated with fiberglass, and then cured. After curing, the part is extracted from the mold and then sent to undergo further finishing processes, if applicable.
Types of Fiberglass Sheets
The three main types of fiberglass molding are as follows:
- Open Molding
- In this process, the fiberglass is enforced with a gel coating and cured all in a one-piece mold.
- Closed Molding
- This method involves applying the initial gel coat into a two-part mold. The item is then sealed into the mold by a vacuum and then allowed to cure before having resin injected into the enclosed mold.
- Centrifugal Molding
- This process is used primarily for cylinder-shaped items such as pipes or cylindrical tanks. The cylindrical mold spins as the gel coating is applied, layer by layer.
Accessories of Fiberglass Sheets
After acquiring fiberglass sheets, your application may require you to cut and trim them. Fiberglass material can be easily cut. However, it can just as easily chip, splinter, and send harmful fibers flying. Fortunately, there are several ways to efficiently cut fiberglass to ensure neater and safer results. Several cutting machines that are available include:
- Router With a Fine-Edged Blade
- The finer the edge, the smoother the cut will be.
- Fiberglass Power Trimmer
- It is strong, light in weight, and is available in different trimmer sizes.
- Jigsaw Equipped With a Blade Suitable for Cutting Metal
- If you need to cut curves into a fiberglass sheet, this tool is recommended.
- Hacksaw
- These tools are suitable for cutting fiberglass because of its fine blades, but require more work to operate and are not ideal if a long cut is necessary.
- Before undertaking this task and handling any of this machinery, it is important to carry out the project in an area where others will not walk in and out. It is equally important to wear leather gloves, a face mask, filter mask, and clothes that can be discarded. Taking these precautions will ensure the safety of yourself and others around you.
