Applications of Lift Off Hinges
Lift off hinges have several uses due to their convenience and ease of use. In offices that receive regular large deliveries, easily removable doors make the receiving process quicker, avoiding any hassle.
There are conditions that require a method for emergency access. In assisted living resident homes, bathroom doors or any door that must be locked for privacy is required to have a specially designed hinge to be able to quickly remove the door.
Lift off hinges are the answer to conditions that are constantly changing. They can be installed on both sides of an entrance way (with the male attached to the door and the female attached to the door frame or the female on the door and the male on the door frame). When the male and female positions are reversed, the male is installed with the pin pointing upward.
Lift Off Hinge Design and Function
Unlike the typical hinge that has three parts with a pin and two wings, a lift off hinge has two parts that easily fit together by a shaft attached to the male hinge. The two wings or leaves, one being male and the other female, are connected by a pin that is mounted and solidly attached to the stationary surface of the male hinge. The female hinge is secured to the frame of the door while the male hinge is attached to the door.
The unique design of lift off hinges allows for the male hinge, which is attached to the door, to be lifted off the female hinge quickly in one fluid motion. This allows for a door to be removed multiple times without the need to remove screws or the need for tools. It is simply a matter of taking both sides of the open door and lifting straight up in a single motion. With ease, the male hinge on the door slips out of the female hinge, allowing the door to be placed aside for free and open passage.
Materials Used in Manufacturing Lift Off Hinges
The types of metal used to make these hinges include stainless steel, steel, brass, and alloyed zinc. They can also be made of plastic and used as a lightweight alternative to metal since plastic provides for smooth and silent operation.
Manufacturing Process of Lift Off Hinges
There is little difference between the pin and wing hinge and the two-piece wing hinge when it comes to the types of materials used in their construction or how they are made. Each type begins with a sheet of metal, which is cut to the size of the hinge in a process known as shearing.
The sheared plates are placed in a die where they are punched and shaped into the design of the hinge. Hinges with screw holes have the holes drilled. The hole for the pins is created by bending the sheared pieces with the pin being permanently attached to the male hinge.
